About Dr Sarah

Dr Sarah Cunningham is a highly experienced General Practitioner with a passion for women’s health, preventative medicine and helping women live healthy, active lives at every stage.

With more than 25 years’ experience running her own five-doctor general practice in Brisbane, Sarah brings a wealth of knowledge to her work at Wahini. Her approach combines traditional general practice with evidence-based lifestyle medicine, looking beyond individual symptoms to understand the bigger picture of a woman’s health.

Sarah has undertaken extensive study in Lifestyle Medicine and has a particular interest in how nutrition, movement, sleep, stress and other everyday factors can support long-term health and wellbeing. She also has a growing interest in ADHD in midlife, including the ways it can present and impact women during periods of hormonal and life transition.

Wherever possible, Sarah works with her patients to prevent illness, improve health outcomes and make realistic, sustainable changes that support lifelong wellbeing.

Her Approach

Sarah believes good healthcare isn’t only about treating illness when it appears. It’s about giving women the knowledge and tools to protect and strengthen their health for the years ahead.

Her approach is practical, preventative and grounded in evidence. She takes the time to look at the many factors influencing a patient’s wellbeing and works collaboratively to find realistic changes that can have a meaningful impact over time.

For women navigating midlife in particular, Sarah understands that hormonal changes, physical health, mental wellbeing, lifestyle and neurodivergence can intersect in complex ways. Her interests in menopause, ADHD and Lifestyle Medicine allow her to consider the whole person, not simply a collection of symptoms.

Outside the Clinic

Life outside Wahini is wonderfully full for Sarah. She has four adult children and eight grandchildren under nine, with the whole family living together in a multigenerational home in the Tweed, so there is rarely a quiet moment!

When she does find some time for herself, Sarah loves singing and playing guitar and piano, as well as dancing, yoga and creating art. She also practices what she preaches when it comes to staying strong and active, lifting heavy twice a week.

Nature is another important part of Sarah’s life. She loves escaping in her camper van, spending time outdoors and enjoying the beautiful environment around her. A passionate environmentalist and member of Doctors for the Environment, her interest in wellbeing extends beyond the individual to the health of our communities and the world around us.
